Rolex watches are made to be worn. And, in the world of Rolex, I'm not sure there's a watch that embodies that idea more than the Rolex Explorer, available at .
In 1953, Sir Edmond Hillary wore a Rolex Oyster Perpetual to the summit of Mt. Everest. That watch, which was later returned to Rolex by Hillary, would become the foundation on which Rolex would build the Explorer line - an ever tightening bond between man and tool, to discover what might lay beyond.
This Explorer, the reference 114270 does that history service. It's a modern execution of that exact philosophy.
First, the obvious: a black dial with luminescent Arabic numbers at 3′, 6′ and 9′, no date, smooth bezel, and triangular marker at 12 o’clock. Although much more sporty and angular, this Explorer retains the fundamental design cornerstones of the model line.
It's an incredibly robust watch, and yet at 36mm, it's totally unobtrusive. It exists in a world where sports watches below 40mm are marketed almost exclusively to women, and it stands alone. Why? In staying true to the Explorer heritage, it had to be designed to give its wearer complete mobility in the stickiest of situations. And while the kind of people that conquer the seemingly impossible might LIKE big watches, they certainly don't NEED them to prove anything.
Powered by the chronometer grade 3130 Rolex automatic in house caliber, it’s a tank on the inside too.
So, whether you’re grasping on to frozen rock for dear life or showing your nieces and nephews how the monkey bars are really done, your movement perpetually charges your watch. A nonnegotiable when its comes to tools.
When it comes to Rolex, there's a lot of contention out there today. Have they traded their core principles for bling cash? Maybe a little. But this, the Explorer reference 114270, is part of the old guard, just in a new kind of way. It has all of the perks of modernity - scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and a truly waterproof screw-down crown - while maintaining all of the truth, what an Explorer should be.
Its an heir to some of the richest history of the watch world, it's the kind of watch you can wear, trust, rough up and always know that one day, your son or daughter will do the same. And yes, it's officially available.
