Musk, founder of SpaceX, at the age of 30, made his first fortune by selling two successful companies: Zip2, which he sold for $307 million in 1999, and PayPal, which eBay purchased for $1.5 billion in 2002, according to The New York Times. Musk decided that his next major project would be a privately funded space company.
Musk first proposed sending a greenhouse to Mars, dubbed the Mars Oasis. His goal was to pique public interest in exploration while also providing a scientific base on Mars.
