About the Album

Beyond the Stars is an unprecedented celebration of the vibrant traditions of many lands by acclaimed British composer Sami Yusuf. His new album features eight new compositions that are among his strongest works to date as well as new arrangements of previous works. Rarely has a composer turned a singular vision into such a beautiful multi-layered performance as is found in this album.

Performed and recorded live at the Dubai EXPO iconic Al Wasl Plaza, Sami Yusuf has created a living soundscape of the Silk Road through his brilliant use of Gregorian chant, Andalusian mawwals, Azerbaijani mugham, qawwali, the poignant sound of the Chinese erhu, and Sufi music from North Africa to India. Lyrics are drawn from beloved mystical poets – Rumi, Yunus Emre, Nasimi, Mansur al-Hallaj, Amir Khusro, Bulleh Shah, and Hildegard von Bingen. The entire concert is performed by international vocalists and master musicians on traditional instruments – sitar, rabab, erhu, tar, santur, qanun, ney, kemanche, balaban, oud, tabla, and daf.

‘Beyond the Stars’ draws upon the music and poetry of lands that have given the world some of its greatest artistic traditions. In this meeting place of cultures, they enter into a unique musical dialogue that both reveals each tradition’s distinct beauty and arrives at an understanding of the transcendent unity underlying each one.
