What’s the “The Bridge on the River Kwai” movie about?
In the Burmese jungle, in 1943, a British colonel, a prisoner of the Japanese, demands that his men build a bridge to safeguard their discipline. Here, there is no longer, on one side, the Western powers, endowed with both good law and good methods, facing an enemy that barely has a silhouette, but two civilizations that oppose each other, with their customs, their beliefs and the perversions of these beliefs. For Saito (Sessue Hayakawa from The Cheat and Swiss Family Robinson), driven by the bushido code of honor, the English are despicable, because they feel no shame in being beaten. If he is defeated, he will commit suicide. Convinced that the British Empire's mission is to uphold the law, Nicholson (Alec Guinness from The Lavender Hill Mob and the original Star Wars trilogy) endures and perseveres to impose his moral superiority over the barbarians. For Shears (William Holden from Stalag 17 and Sunset Boulevard), the American, war is only a matter of survival, devoid of any heroic dimension, where the strongest and the smartest win.
