Amil Shivji, director of Tug of War (Vuta N’Kuvute), visits the BFI Southbank to talk about his film, which closed the BFI's Film Africa: Beyond Nollywood festival.
A period drama set in 1950s Zanzibar, during the tense build-up to revolution.
Denge is a resistance fighter against the British colonial power. Yasmin is a young Indian-Zanzibari woman fleeing a loveless marriage. This elegant adaptation of the eponymous award-winning Swahili novel by Shafi Adam Shafi is inspired by Wong Kar-Wai’s In the Mood for Love and combines exquisite cinematography, detailed period costumes and lovely taarab music in a cinematic vision at once unique and spectacular.
